Political Protests in Ulaan Baatar:
For those traveling with Boojum Expeditions and interested parties we do not anticipate any changes in your trip or any safety concerns for you or your party. We have 6 groups in Mongolia right now (including four in UB), and none of them have had to alter their itineraries or daily activities due to the protests. In casting about for more information, I found a blog entry by an American living in Mongolia dated July 2: http://welovesaipan-bigsoxfan.blogspot.com/. This will hopefully provide a counterpoint to what you see and hear in the news (fyi - he isn't affiliated with Boojum, he's an expat living in Ulaan Baatar and married to a Mongolian).
Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any more concerns. We are in constant contact with our UB office during this, and will be happy to answer any questions.
You’ve undoubtedly read about the recent unrest in Ulaan Baatar following the June 29 elections. Protests are centered on suspected election fraud, and are not aimed at foreigners in any way. The vast majority of Mongolians are willing to discuss the dispute in a rational and reasonable manner, but a small group saw an opportunity to vandalize and draw attention. A curfew was enacted for one night in UB and has since been lifted. No violence or protests have been reported outside of downtown UB. The US State department monitors international affairs daily and currently has no alerts regarding travel to Mongolia.
Our staff and clients in Mongolia have been largely unaffected, except for some inconvenience of movement through the capital. Internal Mongolian flights are operating on schedule, and transit between hotels in UB and the airport is unrestricted. It is important to be an aware and informed international traveler so that you can avoid unnecessary risk. In this situation, we recommend avoiding any protests or demonstrations in downtown UB.
